Pelvic Health FAQs

Why should I see a pelvic health physiotherapist after a C-section?

Many people assume pelvic health physiotherapy is only needed after a vaginal birth, but the pelvic floor and core muscles are still affected during pregnancy, even with a C-section delivery.

During pregnancy, the pelvic floor supports the growing baby while the abdominal wall stretches. After a C-section, the body still needs to restore coordination between the pelvic floor, deep abdominal muscles, and core system.

A postpartum visit can help you:

  • Learn how to activate your pelvic floor and core effectively
  • Improve strength and stability
  • Support recovery of the abdominal wall
  • Prepare for a safe return to exercise and daily activities

The goal is to help you feel strong and confident as you return to activity.

Does a pelvic health physiotherapy session require an internal exam?

No. An internal exam is not required during a pelvic health physiotherapy visit.
An internal assessment can provide useful information about how the pelvic floor muscles are functioning, such as identifying areas of tension, weakness, or possible changes after birth. However, it is always optional and only done with your consent.

Pelvic health physiotherapists can also assess function using:

  • External assessment and palpation
  • Movement and breathing evaluation
  • Observation of core and pelvic coordination
  • Real-time ultrasound, which can help visualize how the muscles contract and relax

Your therapist will discuss all options with you and proceed in a way that you are comfortable with.
